The Municipality of Maputo has a deficit of 30 million Meticais for garbage collection in all the neighborhoods of Maputo. In other words, the municipality manages to collect only 14 million of the 44 million Meticais needed each month for this activity.
"At the moment, we have a monthly bill resulting from primary collection of around 10 million 370 thousand Meticais, and another from secondary collection, which is the main one, where we see the direct effects, of around 33 million 560 thousand Meticais, totaling around 44 million Meticais a month," explained João Munguambe, the councillor for Infrastructure and Health, to O Pais.
The 14 million it receives each month comes from the collection of the garbage tax by the EDM company, while the 30 million it collects has to come from other resources, at a time when the debt has to be added to.
"This year we paid around 60 million to Ecolife, and we paid the same amount to Enviroserv. This is to say that we are making the payments, but this payment is, of course, insufficient to cover the past debts we have," concluded the councillor.
The municipality says it is continuing to mobilize additional resources to cover debts with Ecolife, Enviroserv and Clean Africa.
