Vietnam could increase the volume of coal imports from Mozambique to feed its industry, especially for electricity production.
This was expressed during a meeting in the capital Hanoi between the management of Vietnam National Coal & Mineral Industries (Vinacomin) and Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, who yesterday (08) began a three-day official visit to the Asian country at the invitation of his counterpart, Ti Lam.
According to the Mozambican Deputy Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy, António Saíde, the meeting with Vinacomin was aimed at discussing the exploitation of industrial minerals and coal.
"It's important to say that around 65% of electricity generation in this country is based on fossil fuels. Coal is a determining factor in this industry and His Excellency President Nyusi encouraged Vinacom to visit Mozambique," said the Mozambican government official.

He explained that during the meeting the Vietnamese authorities expressed their desire to import coal directly and not exclusively through concessionaires.
"It was fundamental in the position that, as a country, we expressed our interest in there being more investment in the different resources, including coal, which is very necessary for the economy of this country (Vietnam)," he added.
