Mozambique receives additional support from the European Peace Facility

The European Peace Facility has adopted additional support of 45 million euros for Mozambique's Defense and Security Forces (DSF), bringing the European Council's counter-terrorism assistance to 89 million euros.

The additional amount is in addition to the €44 million adopted in November 2021 under the European Peace Fund (EPF), aimed at empowering the Mozambican army to better deal with the terrorism phenomenon that has plagued the country since late 2017.

The announcement was made this Tuesday in Maputo, by Vice-Admiral and Director of the European Union Military Staff, Herve Blejean, during a meeting held with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Veronica Macamo.

"The European Council adopted, on April 21, a decision amending the measure of assistance to the Mozambican Armed Forces, adding an additional amount of 45 million euros. This additional amount brings the EPF's overall support to Mozambique to 89 million euros," assured the Vice-Admiral.

According to the source of the European Union's General Staff, cited by AIM, the assistance measure aims to reinforce support for capacity building and deployment of units of the Armed Forces of Mozambique trained by the European Union Training Mission - EUTM Mozambique.

It has ensured that the support also covers the provision of integrated packages of equipment and supplies in conjunction with EU training missions to ensure that it is efficient and effective, making trained troops fully operational and self-sufficient upon deployment.

Through this assistance measure, the European Union will finance equipment to benefit about 11 Mozambican companies to be trained by the EUTM, including individual and collective equipment, land mobility means, as well as a field hospital.
