The country plans to export about 83 million tons of various goods by 2024 to the Interland countries through the ports of Maputo, Beira and Nacala. For this purpose, more than 80 percent of the goods will be destined for Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The data was shared last Friday by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Janfar Abdulai, during the inauguration ceremony of new cargo handling equipment of the company Cornelder Mozambique, manager of the port of Beira.
"The Government's Five-Year Program 2020-2024 envisions the increase of cargo handled in national ports from the approximately 48 million tons recorded in 2019, to about 83 million tons by 2024," he said.
In this sense, rehabilitation, expansion, and modernization works will take place in transportation infrastructures such as ports, railways, and roads.
"The acquisition of port handling equipment, which we have the privilege of inaugurating, fits into the vision set forth in the Government's Five-Year Plan," he emphasized.
In his turn, the Managing Director of Cornelder Mozambique, Djeny Difraise, said that the institution will make several investments aimed at modernizing the port of Beira.
"Last month we established a regional agreement for clinker handling, when we unloaded the ship with an average throughput of 10,500 tons per day," he explained.
By December of this year, the Port of Beira expects to handle more than 700 million cubic meters of tons of various products.
