Mozambique and Malawi to have a one-stop border

Moçambique e Maláui passam a ter fronteira de paragem única

The Zôbué, Muanza, Calomué and Ndiza border posts, which establish the crossings between Mozambique and Malawi, will be operating under a one-stop border regime from the end of April this year.

The decision was taken by the two governments during the bilateral meeting taking place in the city of Tete, in the central province of the same name, under the guidance of the Mozambican High Commissioner to Malawi, Alexandre Manjate, and the Malawian Ambassador to Mozambique, Wezi Moyo.

According to Rádio Moçambique, the measure aims to facilitate trade by combining the modernization and establishment of one-stop border posts, investments in communication and information technologies, reforms related to international transactions and measures to support the development of value chains.

Mozambique's High Commissioner in Malawi, Alexandre Manjate, who was speaking this Tuesday in the city of Tete, explained that the technical meeting underway aims to harmonize the procedures to be implemented on the two borders.

Manjate said that, initially, part of the migratory services will be based in Malawian facilities, due to the fact that this country has completed its facilities on three of the four borders with Mozambique, namely Muanza, which borders Zôbué, and Ndiza, which borders Calomué in the central province of Tete.

"The work that the two teams have done is to visit the sites, identify the pros and cons, draw up reports that will be debated and based on this we will decide that in the near future this project can become a reality, bearing in mind that the reports drawn up so far reflect the desire of both parties to soon operationalize this project of extreme importance for both countries as well as for the region," Manjate said.

Malawi's ambassador to Mozambique, Wezi Moyo, stressed that the decision taken between the parties is a gain to be celebrated, since for the first time in the history of both countries a project is being implemented that is of mutual benefit.

"The two delegations reached a consensus that this programme should be implemented immediately, so we are harmonizing the procedures and hope that by the end of April the project will start," said Moyo.
