The national women's team will no longer take part in the 2026 World Championship Qualifying Tournament, which will take place in Mexico from the 19th to the 25th of this month. The confirmation comes from the Mozambican Basketball Federation (FMB).
According to the Mozambican basketball governing body, 200,000 dollars, equivalent to 12.6 million meticais, are a condition for the National Senior Women's Basketball Team to take part in the 2026 World Cup Qualifying Tournament. This amount would be used to buy tickets and all the logistics for the event.
Speaking at a press conference today, the president of the Mozambican Basketball Federation, Paulo Mazivila, revealed that these financial difficulties had forced him to announce the withdrawal of the national team.
Even so, Mazivila said there was "a glimmer" of hope, as talks were underway with the government and other partners to make it possible for the Mozambican national basketball team to take part. However, even if the amount is obtained, it won't be possible for the national team to travel tomorrow, due to logistical reasons.
Meanwhile, on the subject of the funds supposedly made available by the multinational TotalEnergies to support the national combine, the FMB president declined to comment, promising to address the issue tomorrow, Wednesday (14), at a new press conference.
Mozambique took part in the World Cup for the first time 10 years ago (2014), in Turkey.
The national team should have traveled to Pennsylvania, in the United States of America, last Thursday, where until tomorrow, Wednesday, they were due to complete a pre-competition training camp with a view to taking part in the World Championships.
In Group B, Mozambique's debut in the race for the World Cup was scheduled for the early hours of Tuesday morning (20), against the home team, Mexico. Two days later, the national team was due to meet Montenegro, and the stage ended against New Zealand in the early hours of Saturday morning.
