Mozambique marked this Sunday, June 5, the World Environment Day under the slogan "One land for climate resilience. For more than a decade that the country has been waiting for funding from the Green Climate Fund, but the authorities are optimistic that the process will be concluded.
For a little over a decade, Mozambique has been waiting for the conclusion of the process that will allow it to access financing from the Green Climate Fund, a mechanism that will help the country face climate change.
The Mozambican Environment Minister, Ivete Maibasse, is optimistic about the good conclusion of the process, but considers that "bureaucratic issues" have been delaying access to the Green Climate Fund.
"Mozambique has been in a process for almost more than 10 years of applying for the National Fund for Sustainable Development to access funding from the Green Climate Fund, a process that we consider to be very bureaucratic, but from the latest information everything indicates that we are well on the way to reaching the end," explained Ivete Maibasse quoted by RFI.
The Green Climate Fund was established by 194 countries that are part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2010 and aims to support a paradigm shift in the global response to climate change.
The Fund pays special attention to the needs of societies most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, in particular the least developed countries, small island developing states, and African countries.
Mozambique marks this Sunday the World Environment Day under the slogan "One land for climate resilience", Ivete Maibasse called for the union of efforts in the fight against climate change.
"We all have a responsibility to continue to promote sustainable development at all levels for the sake of the present and particularly the future generations of our countries," he warned.
Mozambique has been heavily buffeted by cyclones and is one of the most affected by climate change.
