Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe will invest a total of three million dollars in a feasibility study for the construction of a deep water port in Maputo and a railway line, the heads of state announced.
"We have reached an agreement that each country, invests one million dollars to carry out the feasibility study, said the President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, after a meeting with the head of the Mozambican state, Filipe Nyusi, who is on a working visit to Gaborone.
The project, which is expected to involve the private sector includes a railway line connecting the three countries over a length of 1100 kilometers.
According to the head of state of Botswana, the aim is to boost relations between the three countries, facilitating the export and import of products, especially oil. "We have the development of this port as the commitment," Masisi stressed, quoted by Mozambique Television.
For his part, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi reiterated the involvement of the private sector in making the project viable. He invited the presidents to fly over the area where the port will be built in Maputo. D
In addition to the project, during this visit, Filipe Nyusi and his Botswana counterpart signed cooperation agreements to boost areas such as agriculture and energy, as well as biodiversity conservation and defense.
