Hidden Debts: Public Prosecutor seizes luxury assets from defendants

The Mozambican justice will seize the assets of some of the defendants involved in the country's largest corruption case "Hidden Debts", allegedly because they were acquired with the money from the financial default of more than 2.2 billion dollars.

A national portal suggests that the most mind-blowing, or breathtaking, assets belong to António Carlos Do Rosário, former Director of Economic Intelligence at the State Information and Security Service (SISE) and also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the three companies created at the origin of the financial scandal, namely Ematum, MAM, and ProIndicus.

According to the source, who claims to have the Application submitted by the Public Ministry to the Court, requesting the seizure of the assets of the 19 defendants, 40 properties will be seized from the SISE spy alone, some registered in his own name and others in the name of Indico Property - Sociedade Unipessoal Lda; Txopela Investiments S.A.; and Mabassa Hotel Lda. - companies used by him for the alleged money laundering.

The portal says that António Carlos Do Rosário owns, for example, 30 apartments of "type 1", which are between the 11th and 18th floor of the building Xenon Urban Apartments, on Avenida Julius Nyerere, in Maputo. In the same building, the defendant owns a store (on the first floor), an auditorium, an office, a meeting room, and a "type 2" apartment. He also owns a "type 3" autonomous fraction on the 18th floor of that building in the prime area of the capital of Mozambique and a terrace with a swimming pool.

According to prosecutors, Do Rosario also owns four properties located in Quelimane city, Zambezia province. He also owns five apartments in the Zimpeto condominium in the neighborhood with the same name, on the outskirts of Maputo, next to Joaquim Chissano University (former Higher Institute of International Relations - ISRI). He has a house on Avenida Ahmed Sekou Touré in Maputo City and a warehouse (in the ZTC warehouses) in the Zimpeto neighborhood, near the Vehicle Inspection Workshop, along National Road No. 1.

In the luxurious Belo Horizonte district, in the municipality of Boane, António Carlos Do Rosário owns a property R/C and 1st floor, still under construction, and 16 plots of land. He also owns two plots of land, one in the Costa do Sol district (Maputo City) and the other in the Pebane district, Zambézia Province.

In its application, the Public Ministry says it will also seize 15 plots belonging to Manuel Renato Matusse, in the Romão neighborhood in Maputo city, the same neighborhood where the former Head of State, Armando Emílio Guebuza, lives. It will also be seized a residence, located in the neighborhood Muzingane, in Limpopo district, Gaza province.

For the former Secretary of Guebuza, Maria Ines Moiane Dove, the Public Ministry will arrest a property in the Triunfo district, in Maputo city, a hall of events, called "Happy Farm", in Matola Rio, Boane district, Maputo province and a plot, located in the neighborhood of Polana Caniço, also in Maputo city.

In turn, Cipriano Mutota will lose three properties, being two in the 25 de Junho A and B neighborhoods, in Maputo city, and one in Mapulango neighborhood, in Marracuene district, Maputo province.

Teófilo Nhangumele, Zulficar Ali, Bruno Langa and Fabião Mabunda will each lose only one house. Teófilo Nhangumele and Bruno Langa will lose their houses that are located in the neighborhood Djuba, in the district of Boane, Maputo province, while Zulficar Ali will lose a house that is located in Avenida Mao Tsé Tung and Fabião Mabunda will lose a house that is in the neighborhood of Magoanine "A".
