Doctors suspend strike for 40 days and resume activities this Thursday

Médicos suspendem greve por 40 dias e retomam actividades esta quinta-feira

The Mozambican Medical Association (AMM) decided today to immediately suspend the strike and resume activities from Thursday (24), as a "vote of confidence" in the new dialog commission.

The strike will be suspended for 40 days, until October 2nd, if a consensus is reached, according to AMM President Milton Tatia.

"We, the medical profession, have decided to give a vote of confidence to this team that has been set up, and we are going to temporarily suspend our strike from tomorrow. We'll be working tomorrow, and we'll wait until October 2nd," announced Tatia.

He clarified that during this period the AMM will also be verifying whether the counterparty has addressed the concerns of the class to improve certain working conditions considered crucial in the exercise of their work.

On Tuesday (22), the Executive announced the creation of a new commission led by Prime Minister Adriano Maleianeto follow up the talks between the government and the doctors.

According to Milton Tatia, the interruption is based on the glimpse of "a light at the end of the tunnel" to find joint solutions, namely between the government and all the health associations, "for the benefit of the national health service". "I'm talking about the government here, not the Ministry of Health," he said.

AMM's pronouncements took place at the beginning of Wednesday evening. In the morning, at the official opening of the XI National Culture Festival, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, called on doctors and the government to find solutions that are feasible in the country's reality. "It was decided to set up a joint working team that will include the government, the AMM, the Order of Doctors and other socio-professional associations and orders from the Ministry of Health to work in depth on the conditions of our national health service and try to resurrect the national health service," said Tatia.

The AMM had been on strike since July 10, and the third phase was now underway, after two extensions. Each phase lasted 21 days. In the last extension, announced on Sunday (20), the AMM warned that it could stop providing minimum services throughout the country.

The Ministry of Health was due to hold a press conference this Wednesday, where the Deputy Minister of Health, Ilesh Jani, was supposed to present the general situation of the country's health facilities in the context of the doctors' strike, but it didn't take place. A ministerial communiqué circulated gave the indications for the conference, but it was immediately taken out of circulation. As yet, the reasons for the cancellation and a new date are unknown.
