The movement of cattle, meat and their by-products from Manica province is banned due to an outbreak of anthrax.
The cases were notified on March 1, according to information provided by the National Directorate for Livestock Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER) and quoted by Notícias.
According to the source, Anthrax is a serious zoonosis caused by the bacterium bacillus anthracis, which can affect humans, domestic and wild animals, and is on the list of priority diseases in Mozambique.
A statement issued by MADER, quoted by "Notícias", says that the outbreak is a consequence of the drought, which is affecting the country as a result of the El Niño phenomenon.
In October 2023, the veterinary authorities issued a warning to the provinces about the risk of the disease occurring.
"In animals, transmission occurs through direct contact with infected animals or by consuming contaminated pasture or water. In humans, transmission can occur through skin infection, gastro-intestinal infection or inhalation, the latter causing the most deaths," explains MADER, quoted by the newspaper.
