Nampula municipality needs 18 M$ to build landfill site

Município de Nampula necessita de 18 M$ para construção de aterro sanitário

The municipality of the city of Nampula, in the northern region of Mozambique, has revealed that it needs 18 million dollars, equivalent to 1.2 billion meticais, to build a sanitary landfill, the aim of which is to reduce the problem of flooding in the existing dumpsites.

According to the city council, funding is being mobilized from cooperation partners.

"Our dumps are practically full. We're still negotiating with our partners to see if we can start building a landfill next year, because that's the only way we'll be able to minimize the proliferation of garbage," explained the president of Nampula's municipal council, Luís Giquira.

For Giquira, the landfill will also boost the local economy, allowing for waste collection and recycling work, which will generate new sources of income for residents.

Data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that the city of Nampula produces an average of more than 400 tons of garbage a day.
