The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) says it has counted more than half a million people killed since the post-election protests began on October 21, 2024.
"Since October 21, we as the CDD have counted 527 people," said CDD activist André Mulungo.
He noted that this death toll includes the ten victims who died yesterday in Maputo and Nampula; the 60 charred victims of a fire inside a warehouse in the Geórgi Dimitrov "Benfica" neighborhood in Maputo city; the massacres in Ribauè (Nampula) and Morrumbala, in Zambézia; and also the more than 100 people murdered during "the alleged escape" from the Central Prison and the Maximum Security Prison "B.O", in Maputo province.
Mulungo was speaking this morning outside the Attorney General's Office, where he filed a criminal complaint against a Rapid Intervention Unit agent who, together with another colleague, assaulted a citizen on the sidelines of Daniel Chapo's investiture ceremony.
