Frelimo CC member defends police reforms

Membro do CC da Frelimo defende reformas na polícia

Arlindo Chilundo, a member of FRELIMO's central committee, advocates reforms in the Mozambican police in order to deal with violence in the best possible way.

According to Chilundo, institutional reform goes beyond methods of handling firearms and encompasses issues of defending human rights and freedoms.

In an interview DWcommenting on cases of civilian and police killings, he said that aggressions occurred on both sides.

"We have to look at how we train and educate our police. Training is not just about handling weapons, it also has to be psychological training in how to manage, for example, the anger of the masses without using excessive force," he said.

According to the Central Committee member, Frelimo is going to analyze how reforms in state institutions, "including the police", should be implemented.

"If there are elements to correct there, we'll have to do it. We believe that we must improve the performance of our police, through better training and selection, including the psychological part. We assume this is the state's responsibility and we're going to do it," he said.
