The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, this Thursday defended changes to the law if necessary, considering that democracy is not a finished process, in a context of criticism of the management of the last ballot.
"Let's not be afraid to change the laws that we ourselves have sovereignly drawn up. If something is not well legislated, let it be changed so that the democratic game is as fair, free and transparent as possible," said Filipe Nyusi, during the opening ceremony of the 2024 judicial year in Maputo.
According to the government official, 34 years after the approval of the first multi-party constitution, Mozambique is still learning the rules of the democratic game and the unity of all the players is fundamental to the process.
"We must remain united in order to jointly overcome the challenges of a process in which we are all apprentices. Correcting what does not contribute to the quality of justice is not done with accusations or hatred," said the Mozambican statesman.
The coordination of the three powers is important in building democracy, observed Filipe Nyusi, quoted by Correio da Manhã, stressing that this is never a finished process.
For Filipe Nyusi, the coordination of the three branches of government is also important in building democracy, stressing that "this is never a finished process".
The country held its sixth local elections last year, in which the ruling Frelimo was declared the winner in 60 of the 65 municipalities. However, the vote was strongly contested by the opposition, which did not recognize the official results, and by civil society, alleging fraud, with the Constitutional Council (CC), the highest electoral justice body, admitting the need to revise the electoral law, especially in clarifying the competences of the courts of first instance.
