Young man rescued after 35 hours trapped in "Lúrio" waterfall

Jovem é resgatado depois de 35h preso numa cascata do “Lúrio”

A citizen named Augusto Faustino, 22, was rescued after 35 hours from the waterfalls of the Lúrio River, where he was stuck on a rock, dragged by the waters that are battering the city of Quelimane, in Zambézia.

Speaking to the press at the Police Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), young Faustino said that he was surprised by the waters of the "Lúrio" when he was bathing.

"I didn't know there was a lot of water coming, I just felt myself being dragged, thank God I managed to hold on to a big rock before reaching the waterfalls," said Faustino, quoted by Notícias online.

According to the commander of the PRM in Chiúre, Miguel Pedro Novo, when the district government found itself without the means to carry out the rescue, it asked the provincial authorities, who, in coordination with the FADM, SAMIM and the Institute for Disaster Risk Management, dispatched troops to the scene who ended up rescuing Faustino.

It should be remembered that the first rescue attempt, carried out on Friday morning, had failed due to maneuvering difficulties on the part of the helicopter pilot.
