The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) is warning of the formation of a severe tropical storm, which is expected to hit the country's southern and central provinces with gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour (km/h).
In a statement issued on Sunday (10), the National Emergency Operations Center (CENOE) said that the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane (in the south), Sofala and Zambézia (in the center) remain under alert due to the forecast, in the coming hours, of strong winds and rainfall of over 200 mm/h accompanied by severe thunderstorms.
"The system is expected to affect the provinces of Sofala (Machanga, Chibabava and Buzi), Inhambane (Funhalouro, Mabote, Homoíne, Morrumbene, Massinga, Vilanculo, Inhassoro, Govuro, Panda, the cities of Maxixe and Inhambane). Rainfall of over 100mm/24h is also expected to affect the provinces of Sofala (Dondo, Nhamatanda, Muanza, Gorongosa, Chiringoma, Marromeu, Maringue, Caia, Chemba and Beira), Inhambane (Zavala, Inharrime and Jangamo)," reads the document, adding that in Zambezia province the districts of Chinde, Luabo, Mopeia, Inhassunge, Morrumbala, Nicoadala and the city of Quelimane will be affected.
According to INAM, this is a tropical disturbance that has hit the Mozambican coast and could develop into a severe tropical storm.
In view of the alert, INAM recommends taking precautionary and safety measures for maritime navigation.
