Government suspends new mobile phone tariffs after social protest

Governo suspende novas tarifas de telefonia móvel após contestação social

The Mozambican government has just ordered the immediate suspension of the new minimum tariffs practiced by mobile phone companies for voice calls, SMS and data, recently approved by the regulator.

The measure comes after intense social protest over the new mobile phone tariffs approved by the regulator, the National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM).

The decision was announced a few moments ago by the Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications, Amilton Alissone, at a press conference at the end of a session of the Council of Ministers that took place today.

Quoted by NewsThe minister explained that the decision to direct the communications regulator to suspend the tariffs in force was the result of an assessment of various elements presented to the Council of Ministers.

"We're going back to the old tariffs while the regulator studies the best ones for the national market," said Amilton Alissone.

It should be remembered that a few days ago, the INCM and mobile phone operators announced that they were going to launch specific packages for young people between the ages of 16 and 25.

These are promotional packages with discounts of 0.03 meticais per MegaByte (MB), which means that with 15 meticais you can have 500 MB and 30 meticais for 1 GigaByte (GB).
