Government forecasts 2.9% growth in 2022

Despite the negative impact to the internal production of the companies, caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the Government, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, foresees a production growth of 2.9% for the year 2022, being the priority areas agriculture, fishing, energy and extractive industry.

The information was advanced this Monday by the Minister of Economy and Finance, after a meeting with the 2nd Commission, the one for the Plan and Budget of the Portuguese Parliament, a meeting whose objective was to evaluate the report of the Economic and Social Plan (PES), the State Budget, referring to 2020 and part of 2021.

Adriano Maleiane, cited by "O País", explained that the period 2020-2021 was quite difficult for Mozambican companies, having registered great losses. Despite these figures, with the evolution of the health situation in the country, some sectors are starting to get back on their feet.

"The projection we make for the growth of our economy, for 2022, is 2.9%, and we need to take note that we are coming off negative 1.3 in 2020 and now with 1.5 in 2021, which means that 2.9 will be a big effort to get there. However, we are optimistic," he explained.

The Minister of Finance pointed out, among other sectors, agriculture as one of the areas that will bring the most contribution to the Gross Domestic Product.

"We are convinced, because there is a record of sectors growing, such as agriculture, which will contribute more than 6% more than the current year. Likewise, we have fishing, energy among other sectors, especially in the extractive industry, which, by the end of this year, we will have some export events in the area 4 project," said Maleiane.

On the same occasion, the president of the 2nd Commission, Alberto Niquece, gave a positive evaluation of the report presented by the State, taking into account the context in which the plan was executed.

"The balance we do is associated with these structural and conjunctural factors that have influenced the course of our economy and, because of that, some indicators had to be revised downwards. But it was foreseen, even if in a conditioned way, it was achieved," said Niquice.
