In 2019, the country started the preparation of the Maritime Spatial Planning Plan, aimed at organizing the maritime space, respecting the principles of integrated management and sustainable development, as well as promoting the economic, rational and efficient exploitation of the sea and marine resources.
With this plan, the Government wants to guarantee the legal security and transparency of the procedures for the attribution of titles of private use of maritime space and allow the exercise of information and participation rights, as well as ensure the quality of the information available about the sea.
The other objective of the instrument is to ensure the preservation, protection and restoration of natural values, biodiversity and coastal and marine ecosystems, and the maintenance of the good environmental status of the marine environment, as well as the prevention of risks and minimization of the effects of natural disasters and climate change or human action.
Speaking during the launch of the 2nd edition of the "Crescendo Azul" conference in Inhambane, the Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Augusta Maíta, assured that the legal instrument in reference will be ready by September of this year and, if so, Mozambique will become one of the few countries in the world with an instrument that governs the occupation and exploitation of maritime spaces.
The 2nd edition of the "Growing Blue" conference, to take place in November, in Vilankulo district, Inhambane, will bring together around 500 people from all over the world and will be guided by the slogan "Investing in the ocean's health is investing in the future of the planet.
The event will have four main themes for debate, namely, "Ocean Governance and Sustainability", which will discuss aspects, such as regional and international platforms, marine pollution, biodiversity or conservation, climate change, and food and maritime security.
The theme "Ocean and Innovation" will address matters related to science, technology, and innovation. Regarding the ocean routes, the "Blue Crescendo" conference intends to discuss matters such as maritime transportation, ports, maritime trade, and tourism. Finally, in the theme "Ocean Energy", matters related to renewable energy, oil, gas, and trade will be brought to the table.
It should be noted that the Indian Ocean region, in particular the Mozambique Channel, with its 2700 kilometers of coastline, is extremely rich in biodiversity and coastal marine ecosystems.
