Government defends more investments to guarantee water to all Mozambicans

The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine, said yesterday at the Forum "Jornada das Águas" that Mozambique must invest more in the sector to ensure that the precious liquid reaches everyone.

The Forum "Water Days" under the theme "Sharing Solutions for More Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Water Services" counted with the presence of several investors, among them public, private and foreign, with emphasis on the interventions of the ministers of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine and of the Environment and Climate Action of Portugal, João Fernandes.

On the occasion, the governors of Mozambique and Portugal defended the need to attract more investments for the water business.

"We have the great goal of providing water of the same form, quality and quantity to all social strata. For the same reason, we have to continue to insist on rural areas. The coverage indicator must be the quantity of taps generating water in the country," said Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Water Resources, quoted by the newspaper "O País".

João Machatine raised problems, challenges, but also projects and possible solutions in the operational management within the sector, stressing the issue of rational water use because thousands of cubic meters are spent in a superfluous way in the country.

"Demand is picking up a speed and knowledge of the use of this resource is not keeping up and it is important that we move quickly with literacy," the ruler added.

In his turn, the Portuguese Minister of Environment and Climate Action, João Fernandes, praised the importance of the Portuguese country's cooperation with Mozambique and also pointed out challenges and advances that the two countries observe.

"It is of an exceptional opportunity for transformation. We are going to make concrete investments, I'm talking about infrastructure that will take a long time. We talk about other forms of exploration that will generate the transformation," said João Fernandes.

The leaders also encouraged the private sectors in both countries to embrace the causes in the industry and to take the projects to rural areas where investment is badly needed.
