The Gemrock mining company announced this Sunday the suspension of its ruby extraction operations, following last Thursday's terrorist attack on its establishments in Cabo Delgado province.
The international mining group refers in announcement which has invested millions of dollars in Mozambique and "had to suspend its operations following this terrible attack, as most of the heavy mining equipment needed to run its operations was charred by the insurgents."
"Gemrock has invested more than two billion meticais in its operations in Mozambique and was on the verge of expanding its operations. However, these plans have now been on the back burner," it reads.
The company's personnel were removed from the scene without damage or injury thanks to the security team of Gemrock and Gardaworld (a Canadian private security company) who did not, however, detain any insurgents.
The attack also affected the operations of nearby mining companies, namely Gemfields and Fura Mining, "and the lives of the thousands of local residents directly or indirectly connected to the Montepuez ruby mining complex."
According to the company, the successive attacks put the ruby industry in Mozambique at risk.
