In the space of a month this year, around seven work accidents were recorded at Vulcan's mining camps in the Moatize district of Tete province. At least five workers had to receive immediate outpatient treatment due to the seriousness of their injuries.
A publication by Zitamar says that company sources point to the fatigue caused by working shifts in the mines, but also the lack of protective barriers in some places.
"The mine workers work six eight-hour days in a row, with one day off before the start of the next set of shifts," reads the publication.
Accidents were recorded on June 2, 3, 5, two on June 15, 17 and 24. Another accident was recorded on July 2nd.
"The new working hours don't allow workers to get enough rest between shifts," reads the publication, which quotes company officials.
In addition, Vulcan workers have to live on site and cannot go home for several days at a time.
"The lack of a bridge over the Revúboè river made transporting the workers to their homes more expensive and time-consuming, and Vulcan responded by building accommodation on site and forcing the workers to stay at the mine," writes Zitamar.
