The current President of the Republic and of the Frelimo party, Filipe Nyusi, and the President of the largest opposition party, Ossufo Momade, have confirmed power-sharing deals between the two parties after the release of fraudulent election results, reveals the Center for Public Integrity (CIP).
Through its Electoral Bulletin, the institution states that the Renamo leader was the first to reveal the negotiations, during the first week of the electoral campaign, on September 7, in Cabo Delgado province.
"When we go to elections, they cause fraud, and this time, in 2024, if they cause fraud, they won't make a deal with me, they'll have to make a deal with the Mozambican people. This time I won't accept fraud because we weren't born to be in the opposition, we also want to govern," said Ossufo Momade, quoted by CIP.
The civil society organization believes that Momade's statements reveal that Frelimo and Renamo are negotiating the election results on the sly.
"We won't let Vilankulo negotiate anymore. Inhambane will not negotiate power," said Nyusi at a meeting in Vilankulo last week.
The statements by the two presidents are confessions of what had already been suspected, that Renamo and Frelimo are negotiating for access to power. In other words, Frelimo is using fraud to win the elections and is forcing Renamo to negotiate the allocation of some municipalities, reads the Bulletin.
In past local elections, Frelimo used fraud to win several municipalities that it had lost. Among them are the following: Maputo City, Matola, Massinga, Vilankulo, Marromeu, Gurué, Quelimane, Alto Molócuè, Nampula, Cuamba and Chiure. Renamo objected and was forced to secretly negotiate the return of some of them. The negotiations resulted in the return of the municipalities of Vilankulo, Quelimane, Alto Molócuè and Chiure to Renamo.
