Tropical Cyclone Freddy could enter the country between today and tomorrow through the province of Inhambane, via the districts of Inhassoro, Guvuro or Vilankulo, after hitting the Mozambique Channel yesterday.
Meteorologist Acácio Tembe, from the National Meteorological Institute (INAM), told a meeting of the Technical Council of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD).
The source quoted by the online news portal said that due to the high temperatures at sea, 29 to 30 degrees Celcius, the system will develop into a severe tropical storm, with heavy rains and winds of 160 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 180 kilometers per hour.
The meteorologist also said that this system will "die" on national territory when it reaches the category of low pressure, despite moving towards South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Still quoted by the same portal, Tembe also indicated that heavy, locally heavy rain is forecast for today, mainly in the provinces of Inhambane and Sofala, with more than 100 millimeters in 24 hours.
The system, according to the meteorologist, will remain stationary, creating conditions for heavy rain, locally very heavy, on the 26th and 27th in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala and Manica, with over 200 millimeters in 24 hours.
"We have regions where rainfall could exceed 300 millimeters, especially in northern Gaza, where heavy rain is expected. The same scenario will occur on the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa," he said.
However, in view of the situation, the INGD has already deployed search and rescue resources, especially motor boats, and multi-sector teams are working to prevent deaths and mitigate the impact of the system.
Luísa Meque, president of INGD, the institution responsible for disaster prevention, monitoring and response, said that at the moment the main task is to sensitize people to move away from risk areas.
