Filipe Nyusi wants return of gas mega-projects to Palma, but analysts question safety

The President of the Republic says it is essential to return the mega-projects to the district of Palma, in Cabo Delgado, because the situation of insecurity that forced the companies to suspend their activities has already been controlled.

Meanwhile, political analysts say they note a greater effort by the Mozambican state to protect the gas, but not the people, who are its main resource.

Filipe Nyusi was in Cabo Delgado before heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo this week for another SADC summit in which terrorism in the north of the country was one of the topics discussed.

He again referred to the need for the return of mega-projects to the Palma district, "because Palma is safer now."

The Head of State pointed to the return of the population that had abandoned the district due to the attacks, and the reopening of commercial activity and accommodation and hotel services as signs that should encourage all investors, both national and international.

Meanwhile, journalist Fernando Lima tells VOA that the attacks on the town of Palma have diminished, but the fact that "they occur in places close to the gas projects, that's bad, and maybe that's why the return of the mega-projects is delayed.

Political analyst Egna Sidumo believes, for her part, that due to an established security cordon, the liquefied natural gas project is not threatened at all, stressing that the attacks occur far away from the project.

The also political analyst Borges Namire says he notes with concern the fact that the Mozambican state is more concerned with protecting the gas and not the people, who, in his opinion, are its greatest resource.

"Right now we are talking about thousands of people killed due to the attacks, I think that the gas is diverting the focus of the Mozambican state on what is the essential thing to protect in Cabo Delgado, which is the people," emphasizes that researcher.
