FAO: food prices reached in March "the highest levels ever

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced this Friday (8) that world food prices reached in March "the highest levels ever recorded" because of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which is threatening an international crisis.

Prices for agricultural commodities, such as wheat, corn or sunflower oil, rose 12.6% in March on a monthly basis as the fallout from the Russian attack on Ukraine included threats to upcoming crops.

The FAO index, which tracks the monthly change in international quotations for a basket of staple foods, had already reached in February its highest level since its creation in 1990.

It has now recorded its largest monthly change.

Prices rose, much due to the influence of cereals, whose index indicates an increase of 17.1%, "due to the effect of the strong increases in wheat prices (19.7%) and all secondary cereals."
