Lack of funds constrains construction of one-stop borders in Milange and Ponta do Ouro

Falta de fundos condiciona construção de fronteiras de paragem única em Milange e Ponta do Ouro

The project to build one-stop borders at the crossing points of Milange, which borders Malawi through Zambézia province, and Ponta do Ouro, which borders South Africa through Maputo province, will not be carried out due to a lack of funds.

The World Bank, which is promoting the project, says it has run out of funds to make the initiative viable, according to Paulo Baúque, coordinator of Infrastructure, Trade and Connectivity for Southern Africa, who was speaking in the central city of Tete.

"Not doing the work due to lack of funds," he said, in a publication of the Radio Mozambique.

This week, the governments of Mozambique and Malawi decided to introduce a one-stop scheme at the Zóbué, Muanza, Calomué and Ndiza border posts from the end of this month.

This was announced on Tuesday (08) during a meeting between representatives of the two countries, who stressed that the measure aims to facilitate trade and boost the development of value chains.
