Weather events have destroyed 472 health facilities since 2019

Eventos climáticos destruíram 472 unidades sanitárias desde 2019

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said yesterday that the country has lost 472 health facilities due to catastrophic weather events since 2019 and another 36 due to terrorism in the north of the country.

Nyusi said this at the inauguration of the Matuituíne District Hospital in Ponta D'Ouro, as part of the One District, One District Hospital initiative.

"In addition to the scarcity of resources, the implementation of this initiative has been carried out in a context of multiple adversities, including extreme weather events that have damaged 472 health facilities and another 36 due to terrorism," he said, without revealing those destroyed as a result of the current post-election demonstrations.

Despite the fact that the country has regressed in the provision of health services due to the destruction, Nyusi noted that his government's initiative has ensured direct hospital coverage for at least 4.4 million people in the country.

"In 2019, only 29%, or 45 of our country's 154 districts, had a district hospital. With the implementation of the initiative, in five years, since 2019, eight district hospitals have come into operation," he said.

On the other hand, he said there were guarantees of funding under the initiative for the construction of 12 more district hospitals, with work due to start this year.
