MEPs called for the European Union to play a more active role in resolving the political and social crisis in Mozambique.
According to a VOA report, Hélder Sousa e Silva, a member of the European Parliament's electoral mission to Mozambique, recalled that "it is crucial that all parties involved respect the rule of law. History also shows us that peace is possible even in difficult circumstances, as is the case here."
Several Portuguese MEPs took part in the session, pointing out that it is also the European Union's role to do more to resolve the situation in the African country.
"Guaranteeing electoral transparency and stopping repression are essential steps that the European Union must support in order to respect Mozambican self-determination and sovereignty," said Catarina Martins, an MEP from the Portuguese Left Bloc party.
The politicians also called for more humanitarian aid to solve the problems of hunger and conflict in Mozambique.
During a bilateral visit by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro said he was attentive to the situation in Mozambique and said he was working to "guarantee the capacity for dialogue".
"We will strive to ensure containment, to ensure the capacity for dialogue, to be able to ensure that there is no escalation of violence in Mozambique, so that it can be overcome with respect for institutions and democratic values," said Montenegro.
The country remains in a political and social crisis after the meeting between the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, and the presidential candidates to find solutions to the post-election crisis failed.
