Driving schools to teach in local languages from next year

Escolas de condução passam a ensinar em línguas locais a partir do próximo ano

Mozambican driving schools could start teaching in national languages, namely Xichangana in the South, Ndau and Sena in the Centre, and Macua in the North, with a view to enabling more nationals to acquire a driving license and have full command of the Highway Code, minimizing the problem of road insecurity.

According to a Sunday newspaperIn the first phase, teaching will take place at the Pontifical Academic School in Matola, Maputo province, and next year in Xichangana.

"The four languages were chosen because they are the most widely spoken in the country," says the same publication.

The measure follows a study carried out recently in the districts of Matola, Chókwè, Massinga and Maputo city, where it was found that at these points there was a flow of vehicles, but most of the drivers had not been trained in a driving school to have the document that would enable them to drive.

At the time, many said that they had received instructions on how to drive from friends, family or acquaintances. When asked to talk about why they didn't go to a vocational school, they replied that they couldn't express themselves in Portuguese, while others claimed that the difficulty in understanding the subjects had frustrated their desire.
