General elections: Voter registration ends today across the country

Eleições gerais: Termina hoje o recenseamento eleitoral no País

Voter registration for next October's general elections, a process that lasted 45 days, with a target of registering 7,773,696 potential citizens, ends nationwide today (Sunday 28).

Of this total, 7,494,011 are new registrations in Portugal and 279,685 abroad.

Speaking to the press a few days ago, the spokesman for the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Paulo Cuinica, assured that the registration of potential voters is proceeding at a satisfactory pace, with more than six million citizens having registered by April 22.

According to the source, this figure is in addition to the 8,723,805 registered in the sixth local elections held last year.

However, in order to carry out the vote which ends today, 9,165 posts have been set up, 8,774 on national territory and 391 abroad. A total of 6,330 brigades - 6,033 national and 297 abroad - have also been set up to cover certain areas, reducing the distance between the residence and the registration office.

Meanwhile, due to the insecurity caused by terrorism in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, the government was forced to extend the vote in the Quissanga district, which is due to take place from May 1 to 15.
