Today in Maputo, the Constitutional Council (CC) validated the results of the local elections of October 11, 2023, held in 65 municipalities across the country.
According to the CC's decision, Renamo will govern the municipalities of Chiúre, in Cabo Delgado; Quelimane and Alto Molocué, in Zambézia; and Vilankulo, in Inhambane.
The CC decided, however, to repeat the vote at two polling stations in the municipality of Nacala Porto, Nampula province; three polling stations in Milange and five polling stations in Gurué, both municipalities in Zambézia province.
The CC decided not to validate the elections held in Marromeu, in Sofala province.
The Frelimo party will govern in the other municipalities, with the exception of the city of Beira, where the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) will lead.
This decision by the CC invalidates the conclusion of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) that Frelimo had won 64 municipalities.
After the CNE's announcement on October 26, Renamo submitted appeals to the competent courts claiming victory, not only in those municipalities where today the CC revealed its victory, but also in the cities of Maputo and Matola, the city of Nampula, Nacala Porto, in Nampula.
