The candidacy of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) was annulled by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), spokesman Paulo Cuinica announced today in Maputo.
According to the CNE, the CAD, which has Venâncio Mondlane as its list leader, violated several procedural and formal procedures to legalize its candidacy for the general elections on 9 October.

"CAD's application does not meet the requirements to be approved, under the terms of number 02 of article 180 of Law number 08/2013, of February 27, amended and republished by Law number 02/2019, of May 31, and number 03 of article 22 of Law number 03/2019 of May 31," said Cuinica, noting that nullity can be invoked at any time under the terms of article 256 of the Civil Code.
Asked if he agreed with the decision he presented to the press, Cuinica said he was in favor of what had been decided, not least because it was the first time the CNE had rejected candidacies.
"I've seen this happen several times, and it's nothing new. This is actually the corollary of electoral justice. Electoral justice has steps," he said, stressing that the decision at last instance cannot be appealed.
"We have to come to terms with this decision, whether it's in our favor or not."
