From terrorism to lack of overtime pay: Uncertainties persist just before the start of the new school year

A few days before the start of the school year in February, it is expected that several schools that have been closed due to terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, since October 2017 may remain closed.

Outside of this situation, the Ministry of Education and Human Development guarantees that the textbook will be distributed across the country before the official opening of the school year.

According to a report published by RFI, it is not known for sure how many schools will remain closed due to the recent terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado province. However, as far as school books are concerned, the spokesman for the Ministry of Education and Human Development, Manuel Simbine, gives assurances.

"Every effort is being made to have this learning material in the school before the start of the school year. We have a timetable for receiving the learning materials from the second half of January and as soon as the materials arrive, the distribution process will follow. It's true that we'll also have to distribute books to the other classes, such as 4th, 5th and 6th, which make up primary education, where the learning materials are free. But our greatest pressure and priority is in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades, which is the textbook," he said.

Meanwhile, teachers all over the country are threatening not to teach full classes this year, as well as guaranteeing that if they are not paid the little over 13 months of overtime owed by the government, they will not return to teaching beyond the hour.
