The President and Prime Minister of Timor-Leste today called for dialogue between Mozambicans in order to put an end to the violence that began after the results of the October 9 general elections were announced, and to allow for the normalization of economic activities and security in Mozambique.
"President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão are appealing for dialogue among Mozambicans, calling for a political truce, for dialogue with great serenity and patience, to put an end to the violence and create the conditions for the start of negotiations between all parties," the statement reads.
The negotiations "should lead to an agreement, even if provisional, that puts an end to the violence, restores public order, allows the normalization of economic activities and community security," the statement said.
"Dialogue should continue on a political timetable for the restoration of democratic order and legitimate political power," said the two Timorese leaders, quoted in the same document.
For more than two months, Mozambique has been immersed in political tension characterized by demonstrations that have caused several deaths and the destruction of public and private property.
