Electoral consortium says electoral law favors Frelimo

Consórcio eleitoral diz que a Lei Eleitoral favorece a Frelimo

The electoral consortium, Mais Integridade, says that the Electoral Law and its judicial system are biased in favor of the ruling Frelimo party.

This follows the discovery of irregularities during the repeat vote for local elections in Marromeu, in Sofala province.

The observers of the More Integrity concluded that the irregularities found in Marromeu do not allow for the actual tabulation of results by any entity.

According to the observers' findings, in many polling stations, the presiding officer never finished counting and simply left the polling station.

"But the district court and the Constitutional Council (CC) approved Frelimo's victory. Marromeu shows that the electoral court system doesn't work," reads a bulletin published today on the portal CIP Elections.

"The District Election Commission (CDE) claimed that, because they hadn't waited all night in the closed polling station, the party delegates had left before the count had finished and therefore couldn't protest. The court and the CC accepted the CDE's point of view," says the document.

Mais Integridade criticizes the Constitutional Council's inertia in the face of flagrant irregularities, including the CDE's justification, and its failure to accept evidence of fraud.

According to the bulletin, Frelimo has installed party staff in all the polling stations, including secretaries and presidents of polling stations.

"In some places, where the opposition was likely to do well, even though the count would only take two or three hours, these people were instructed not to sign or post the notices, but simply to wait or disappear, until the observers and party delegates gave up and left. Then they would write alternative notices giving victory to Frelimo," we read.
