CFM train collides with Transnet train

A freight train belonging to the South African company Transnet collided with another train belonging to the state-owned Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) in the early evening of Tuesday (17:15), on a line linking the two countries.

"A Transnet Freight Rail [TFR] train operated by CFM crews, in accordance with the agreement for the operation of trains operating across South African borders, collided with a CFM train that was deviating on the main line between Ressano Garcia in Mozambique and Komatipoort in South Africa," the company said, quoted by the online publication, Freightnews.

The TFR said that there was no movement on the line between Komatipoort, in Mpumalanga (South Africa), and Ressano Garcia, in Mozambique.

The TFR statement says that investigations are underway to determine the causes of the collision.

Some 87 wagons were derailed in this accident, which also damaged a large section of track and led Transnet to declare its sixth force majeure in just 18 months.
