On Friday afternoon, Daniel Chapo was elected President of the Frelimo party with 99.9% of the votes cast by the 249 members of the Central Committee during the third Extraordinary Session of the Frelimo Central Committee.
Chapo took over the leadership of Frelimo 30 days after being installed as President of the Republic, and did what is customary in the Frelimo party: President of the Republic and President of the party at the same time.
His first words were that taking on the leadership of the party is a great responsibility, and he thanked the members of the Central Committee for their vote of confidence.
Chapo said that he would continue to work selflessly to solve the problems affecting Mozambicans, focusing on peace and social stability.
Daniel Chapo succeeds Filipe Nyusi, who left office with Frelimo's image highly weakened and without any credibility with the people, and with that, facing a lot of criticism from public opinion and beyond.
