Canada Provides $30 Million USD for Development Initiatives

Canadá disponibiliza USD 30 milhões para iniciativas de desenvolvimento

Development initiatives that intend to support projects related to fisheries, climate change and gender issues will be eligible for up to $30 million to be made available by the Canadian government.

Access to the fund will be by submitting a proposal through a concept note to the Canadian diplomatic mission in Maputo, according to Canada's High Commissioner in Mozambique, Caroline Delany.

Speaking at an audience granted to him recently by the Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lídia Cardoso, Delany said that Mozambique is Canada's sixth development partner and intends to strengthen cooperation relations in the areas of fisheries, energy and infrastructure.

She said that the fishing sector may receive technical assistance from a Blue Economy specialist, who will join the working group in the elaboration phase of Mozambique's development strategy.

Cardoso appreciated the openness of the Government of Canada in supporting the sector, highlighting the assistance in ocean governance, aquaculture, research, artisanal fisheries, and the fight against illegal fishing.

The Minister highlighted the establishment in the country of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Center.
