Since yesterday, Sunday (16), the district of Mueda, in the province of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, has had a refurbished aerodrome with conditions to receive civilian and military aircraft.
The formal handover of the infrastructure was led by the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, who on the occasion explained that the Mueda Aerodrome is in a position to contribute to the military air defense of the northern region, as well as to the socio-economic development of the country, through civil operations.
Cited by AIMFilipe Nyusi recalled that the infrastructure was built in the 1960s to serve the war waged by the colonial system, with the aim of halting the progress of the struggle against Portuguese colonialism carried out by the then Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO).
"This is where the bombings were coming from, soldiers indiscriminately attacking defenseless men and women in the communities of these regions," said Nyusi.
However, the airfield began to function poorly for the development of the national economy after independence.
The upgrading work included recycling the runways, restoring the taxiways and the aircraft parking apron, illuminated signs at the stations and air communication systems to ensure air communication.
"We all have the responsibility and the task of protecting the infrastructure so that it is not vandalized. The Mueda aerodrome is the longest in terms of compliance in the province," said the President of the Republic.
The Mueda Aerodrome is part of a package of measures to improve the mobility of people and goods in Cabo Delgado Province, a province that deserves special attention, given the situation it is going through.
The vision of the Transport and Communications Sector is to use all modes of transport, namely air, road, sea, lake and river, to meet Cabo Delgado's development needs.
In this context, on October 9, 2023, the airfield and port of Mocímboa da Praia were reopened, with an immeasurable impact on the logistics for supplying the population with basic necessities, as well as supporting the various development projects underway in the region.
It should be noted that, just this year, Cabo Delgado province received three vessels mobilized by the government, through the Ministry of Transport and Communications, to improve the safe transport of people and goods to and from the coastal districts and various islands in the province.
