The World Bank (WB) has just approved financing to the tune of 250 million dollars for the implementation of a rapid transit system (BRT) for public passenger transport in the greater Maputo metropolitan area, which comprises the cities of Maputo and Matola and the towns of Boane and Marracuene.
The funds will be used for the construction of the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and associated facilities in the AMM, a WB press release said.
According to the statement, the amount will also be used to improve roads and access routes to low-income neighborhoods, including the construction of infrastructure for non-motorized traffic, as well as facilitating the mobility of vulnerable groups.
Idah Pswarayi-Riddihough, WB director for Mozambique said cited in the document that the funding achieved represents "another milestone for the improvement of people's lives," in an area that has faced many difficulties.
