Poultry farmers claim losses of 300 million dollars due to demonstrations

Avicultores reclamam de prejuízos de 300 milhões de dólares devido a manifestações

Poultry farmers are claiming losses of 300 million dollars, following the stoppage of their activities in November and December because of the post-election demonstrations..

The data was revealed by Yacub Latif, vice-president of Agribusiness, Nutrition and Food Industry at the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), quoted by the Mozambican daily News.

According to the source, during the demonstrations there were difficulties in accessing raw materials, such as eggs and their incubators, so there were no conditions for the activity to develop.

According to the source, the situation was aggravated by the wave of vandalizations and looting suffered by many companies in the poultry sector in various parts of the country.

"The industry suffered a lot. Retailers were also affected, because at some point there was no feed for sale on the market. When there was feed, it was of questionable quality, due to a lack of certain inputs. If you look, in the Greater Maputo Region in December live chickens were relatively smaller than usual," he explained.

"If this situation continues, I feel that companies and small poultry farmers are going to lose a lot more money and some may close their doors," he predicted.
