The president of Aeroportos de Moçambique, Emanuel Chaves, said on Monday that the Chongoene airport, in the south of the country, is ready and that staff recruitment is underway.
The official told Televisão de Moçambique that the company is investing 1.6 million meticais (over US$25 thousand) to promote the airport.
The Chongoene airport will have the capacity to receive 220,000 passengers per year and has a cargo terminal with an area of 300 square meters, advanced the Mozambican newspaper.
The construction of the airport in Gaza province is valued at US$75 million and was financed by China, Radio Mozambique reported last year.
The works were handed over to the Chinese state-owned company China Aviation International Construction and Investment Co. Ltd.
