The Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, considers that the country must continue to be careful so that the new Omicron variant of covid-19 does not compromise its pace of economic recovery.
To this end, Maleiane said that the country should avoid repeating last year's recession, which resulted in a drop in GDP of 1.3%. According to the governor, the Mozambican economy showed positive signs of recovery this year, which resulted in the growth of 3.36% in the third quarter.
"The country should not view the presence of the Omicron variant with drama, but everyone should maintain preventive measures and adhere to vaccination," argued the Minister of Economy and Finance, who was speaking to journalists at the end of a parliamentary hearing on the proposed law that defines the rules and criteria for setting the remuneration of state employees and agents and other public servants.
In an attempt to contain the spread of the new SARS-CoV-2 strain, several countries have closed borders to foreigners or suspended and restricted international travel to southern Africa, notably Mozambique.
The country has a cumulative total of 1,941 deaths and 151,652 covid-19 cases, of which 98% recovered and nine hospitalized.
