More than a million people are displaced from their areas of residence in Mozambique. The figures were revealed today by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in its latest publication..

According to the UNHCR, armed violence in Cabo Delgado is responsible for most of the displaced, around 834,000, while Cyclone Freddy, which hit the country twice between February and March, forced 184,000 people to seek refuge.

In this sense, the number of people displaced by the conflict in Cabo Delgado has tended to decrease since November 2022, while the number of people who have already returned to their areas of origin continues to increase and is currently around 420,000.

There are still 129,000 people who never returned to their home areas after Cyclone Idai in 2019.

In addition to the internally displaced, the country also has 32,000 refugees and asylum seekers from other countries.

The UNHCR is one of the UN organizations that reveals systematic underfunding of operations in Mozambique: the country information sheet says that only a quarter of the 2023 budget of 47.4 million dollars has been secured.
