Figures released by the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Beatriz Buchili, show that road accidents killed 798 people in Mozambique last year, 146 fewer than in 2022, when 944 people lost their lives.
According to Beatriz Buchili, who was speaking during the annual report on legality and crime in the Assembly of the Republic, road accidents killed 151 people in Maputo province, followed by Gaza province, with 115 deaths.
The Attorney General believes that "the scenario that the country is experiencing in terms of traffic accidents calls for a greater combination of efforts, namely civic education actions, reinforcement of inspection, improvement of roads and, above all, raising driver and pedestrian awareness of strict compliance with traffic rules".
"Corruption among traffic enforcement agents is conduct that favors transgressions resulting in road disasters," said the PGR, stressing that "driving schools," she continued, "must ensure quality training, so that drivers acquire skills that are equal to safe behavior on the roads.
