At least 14 people have died in a week on Mozambican roads as a result of 18 road accidents, including five crashes and rollovers and six pedestrian accidents.
The accidents, which also caused serious injuries to eight citizens and minor injuries to another 10, took place between June 24 and 30, and also caused extensive material damage.
According to a PRM press release quoted by Notícias, excessive speed, pedestrians crossing the road incorrectly and the lack of priority on the roads continue to be the main causes of road accidents in the country.
According to the source, a total of 77,168 vehicles were inspected during the period in question, of which 108 were seized for various irregularities.
The PRM communiqué also says that they confiscated 103 license books and 505 driving licenses and imposed 4,152 fines. At least 25 individuals were arrested for illegal driving, a situation that also occurred with 55 drivers accused of active corruption.
Also in the last week of June, the PRM, in coordination with the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), arrested 1,230 individuals, 612 for border violations, 279 for illegal immigration and 339 for common crimes.
The PRM seized 24 firearms, including seven shotguns, as many pistols, a home-made shotgun and four obsolete AK-47s, as well as 2,961 rounds of ammunition in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Tete, Manica and Niassa.
As for the drugs, the statement said that 60.92 kilograms were seized in the last week of June, including 32 sachets and 16 packages of cannabis sativa, 140 grams and ten packages of heroin and 20 grams of cocaine.
