Access to electricity is still a mirage for 590 million people in Africa

Acesso à electricidade ainda é uma miragem para 590 milhões de pessoas em África

The African Energy Chamber on energy revealed that the world has around 685 million people without access to electricity, the majority of whom, 590 million, live on the African continent.

In the report The State of African Energy in 2025The Chamber points out that Africa's economic development is intertwined with the urgency of its electrification.

The document cited by News to the Minute notes that electrification on the continent "has been delayed by high grid connection costs, low income levels, weak local distribution infrastructure and intermittent demand for electricity".

On the other hand, it believes that investing in electrification is unattractive for companies because the cost of having an electricity connection is a hardship. This is also due to the fact that users can reduce consumption to contain costs.

This scenario "demonstrates the need for investment and the development of an infrastructure that can bridge this gap and improve living conditions on the continent".

The report highlights Africa's strategic role in the global energy transition, especially in the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors.
