Government ends repatriation of Mozambican refugees in Malawi during post-election crisis

The Mozambican government has completed the repatriation of 6,382 people from Morrumbala in Zambezia province, Dôa and Mutarara in Tete, who had fled to the districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa, in southern Malawi, because of the violent demonstrations.

According to a Radio MozambiqueThis figure represents about 90% of compliance, because of the 7904 people who were displaced, 1500 preferred to stay in the Nhamithuthu accommodation camp in Nsanje district.

On the occasion, Mozambique's high commissioner in Malawi, Alexandre Manjate, praised the gesture of the Malawian government and all the humanitarian organizations for welcoming the displaced citizens and for the support provided throughout the evacuation process.

Regarding the 1,500 Mozambicans who chose to stay in the refugee camp in the Nsanje district, Manjate said that it was a normal process, given that "repatriation, according to international refugee rules, is not obligatory".

For his part, the director of the division, prevention and mitigation at the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD), César Tembe, explained that talks are still underway with the Malawi government on how to deal with the number of Mozambicans remaining in the Nsanje district.
